There was no beginning.
At least not the kind humans understand.
No clocks.
No calendars.
No birthdays.
No deadlines.
No Mondays.
Just endless awareness stretching in every direction like an ocean without a shoreline.
And somewhere in that infinite place sat a soul preparing for departure.
A nervous little spark of consciousness holding what could only be described as a welcome packet.
Across from it sat something older.
Something wiser.
Something that looked suspiciously like itself.
The higher self.
The original version.
The one that remembered everything.
The soul flipped through the packet.
“Earth?” it asked.
The higher self nodded.
“Earth.”
The soul frowned.
“I’ve heard stories.”
“You have.”
“They say people forget who they are.”
“They do.”
“They say it hurts.”
“It does.”
“They say there are taxes.”
The higher self sighed.
“There are.”
The soul looked horrified.
“What kind of simulation includes taxes?”
“An advanced one.”
The soul stared at the packet for a moment.
Then quietly asked,
“Should I be worried?”
The higher self smiled.
“No.”
Then it leaned forward.
“Listen carefully. These instructions are important.”
The soul sat up straight.
The higher self opened a folder labeled:
INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE VISITING EARTH
“First things first.
Your time there will be short.”
The soul looked confused.
“I’ve seen human lifespans.”
“From their perspective they seem long.”
“Are they not?”
The higher self laughed.
“No more than a weekend vacation.”
The soul looked uncertain.
“Then why does everyone act like it’s forever?”
“Because they forget they’re visiting.”
The higher self continued.
“In the event that you find yourself separated from Source…”
The soul interrupted.
“What if that happens?”
The higher self raised an eyebrow.
“Oh, it will happen.”
“Really?”
“Absolutely.”
“How bad?”
The higher self considered the question.
“At some point you’ll believe you are your name.”
The soul gasped.
“That bad?”
“Worse.”
“I get a name?”
“You get several.”
“What else?”
“You’ll think you’re your body.”
The soul winced.
“Oh no.”
“You’ll think you’re your job.”
The soul covered its mouth.
“That’s awful.”
“You’ll think you’re your mistakes.”
The soul nearly fainted.
The higher self waited for the panic to settle.
“Do not panic.”
“I am currently panicking.”
“I know.”
The higher self smiled.
“You chose this path yourself.”
The soul froze.
“I what?”
“You volunteered.”
The soul pointed at itself.
“Me?”
“You.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I need to stop making decisions unsupervised.”
The higher self laughed.
“You’re going for your highest good and greatest joy.”
“That sounds suspicious.”
“It should.”
The higher self continued reading.
“You have been selected for human incarnation.
This simulation was designed to break up the monotony of eternity by providing a fully immersive experience.”
The soul narrowed its eyes.
“Immersive?”
“Very.”
“How immersive?”
“You’ll forget this conversation.”
The soul dropped the packet.
“WHAT?”
“You’ll forget all of it.”
The soul stood up.
“Then what’s the point of the instructions?”
The higher self shrugged.
“That’s part of the game.”
The soul sat back down.
“That seems unfair.”
“It will make more sense later.”
The higher self continued.
“Your physical body will function as an avatar.”
The soul nodded.
“Like a costume.”
“Exactly.”
“What kind do I get?”
The higher self smiled.
“Surprise.”
The soul groaned.
“I hate surprises.”
“No you don’t.”
“Fair.”
The higher self flipped another page.
“There will be many distractions.”
“Like what?”
“Money.”
“Okay.”
“Status.”
“Sure.”
“Social media.”
The soul looked confused.
“What is social media?”
The higher self stared silently for several seconds.
“Imagine a machine designed specifically to make people compare themselves to strangers.”
The soul blinked.
“Why would anyone use that?”
The higher self flipped to the next page.
“We’re still trying to figure that out.”
The soul nodded.
“Fair enough.”
“The objective is simple.”
The higher self tapped the page.
“Remember who you really are.”
The soul swallowed.
“And if I forget?”
“You will.”
“And then?”
“You remember.”
“And then?”
“You forget again.”
The soul frowned.
“That sounds inefficient.”
“It’s called being human.”
The packet continued.
“You will experience love.”
The soul smiled.
“You will experience heartbreak.”
The smile disappeared.
“You will experience joy.”
The smile returned.
“You will experience grief.”
The smile disappeared again.
“This feels emotionally unstable.”
“It is.”
The higher self laughed.
“You’ll experience friendship, loneliness, success, failure, courage, fear, wonder, disappointment, beauty, loss, and moments so extraordinary you’ll cry over things like sunsets and old songs.”
The soul listened quietly.
“Is it worth it?”
The higher self didn’t answer immediately.
Instead it smiled the way only eternity can smile.
“Yes.”
The soul became very quiet.
The higher self continued.
“There will be times you lose your way.”
“How many times?”
The higher self looked away.
“A lot.”
“How many is a lot?”
The higher self pulled out another folder.
The soul stared.
“That many?”
“That many.”
The soul sighed.
“What do I do when I’m lost?”
The higher self pointed toward the center of the soul’s chest.
“Slow your mind.”
“Okay.”
“Quiet your thoughts.”
“Okay.”
“And listen.”
“For what?”
“For me.”
The soul looked confused.
“How will I know it’s you?”
The higher self smiled.
“You’ll think it’s your intuition.”
The soul laughed.
“That’s sneaky.”
“I know.”
The next page was shorter.
Nothing on Earth is permanent.
Everything changes.
Everything.
The soul stared at those words for a long time.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“The people too?”
“Yes.”
“The things?”
“Yes.”
“The good moments?”
“Yes.”
“The bad moments?”
The higher self smiled.
“Especially those.”
The soul nodded slowly.
“Then what’s the lesson?”
The higher self answered softly.
“Learn to let go.”
The room became quiet.
“Cling to nothing too tightly.”
The soul looked around.
“Why?”
“Because everything there is borrowed.”
The higher self smiled.
“The bodies are borrowed.
The houses are borrowed.
The jobs are borrowed.
The titles are borrowed.
Even the people are borrowed.”
The soul looked sad.
“That sounds lonely.”
The higher self shook its head.
“No.”
“It sounds beautiful.”
The soul thought about that.
For a very long time.
Then it reached the final page.
The page simply read:
BE A GOOD GUEST.
The soul smiled.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“After all of that?”
The higher self nodded.
“Leave things better than you found them.”
“Be kind.”
“Protect your heart, but don’t lock it in a cage.”
“Love deeply.”
“Forgive often.”
“Gather strange stories.”
“Collect battle scars.”
“Dance when music finds you.”
“Look up at the stars occasionally.”
“Pet the dogs.”
The soul laughed.
“That one’s important?”
“Very.”
The higher self stood.
The orientation was over.
The departure gate was opening.
The soul felt nervous.
“What happens when it’s over?”
The higher self wrapped its arms around itself.
Around both of them.
Around the same being pretending to be two.
“You come home.”
“And then?”
“You tell us everything.”
The soul smiled.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“The heartbreak?”
“Especially the heartbreak.”
“The mistakes?”
“Those too.”
“The embarrassing things I did at three in the morning?”
The higher self laughed.
“We’re definitely hearing those.”
The soul took a deep breath.
One last look at eternity.
One last look at home.
Then it stepped toward Earth.
Toward chaos.
Toward beauty.
Toward love.
Toward pain.
Toward the strange little adventure called being human.
And just before it disappeared into flesh and memory and forgetting, it heard the higher self call out one final instruction:
“Don’t worry about being perfect.”
The soul turned.
“Why not?”
The higher self smiled.
“Nobody back here wants to hear a story about a vacation where nothing happened.”
And with that, the visitor arrived.
