Are the sleepwalkers afraid to go into the darkness?
I think they are.
Not because the darkness is dangerous.
Not because something is waiting for them there.
Because the darkness asks questions the daylight lets them avoid.
The darkness is different when you’re strange.
When you’re weird.
When you’ve spent your entire life being told that your thoughts are too deep, your questions too uncomfortable, your curiosity too sharp.
The darkness stops feeling like an enemy.
It starts feeling like home.
The sleepwalkers move through life with their eyes open and their minds closed.
Routine.
Comfort.
Predictability.
The same conversations.
The same opinions.
The same fears inherited from people who inherited them from other people.
Generation after generation passing down invisible chains and calling them wisdom.
Then there are the others.
The ones who wander into the dark on purpose.
The ones who hear something calling from beyond the edge of what everyone else considers safe.
The ones willing to kneel on the floor with life pressing against their throat and whisper,
“Is that all you’ve got?”
The strange ones.
The weird ones.
The ones who keep asking for more.
More truth.
More understanding.
More growth.
More reality.
Even when it hurts.
Especially when it hurts.
Because they know something the sleepwalkers don’t.
The light on the other side is sweeter.
Not because it is brighter.
Because it was earned.
Anyone can stand in borrowed sunlight.
Not everyone can walk through the valley that tried to break them and emerge carrying their own.
Do the sleepwalkers know they are sleeping?
Do they hear the voices from the other side?
Do they hear the people screaming warnings through books?
Through art?
Through dreams?
Through poetry?
Through strange conversations that linger in the mind long after they end?
Maybe they do.
Maybe that’s why they become uncomfortable.
Because waking up requires responsibility.
Once you see the cage you have to decide whether to remain inside it.
That choice terrifies people.
The funny thing is they desperately want to be understood.
Everyone does.
They want someone to hear them.
Validate them.
See their pain.
Understand their fears.
Understand their reasons.
Understand their story.
Yet so many refuse to offer the same gift in return.
Understanding requires entering someone else’s darkness.
It requires sitting beside experiences you may never have lived.
It requires admitting you might not know everything.
The sleepwalkers want witnesses.
The awakened seek understanding.
There is a difference.
Tell me how sweet the darkness really is.
Tell me what it feels like to stand at the edge where one false move changes everything.
Because every person who has ever transformed stood there.
Every creator.
Every dreamer.
Every artist.
Every warrior.
Every healer.
Every witch.
Every soul that became more than they were yesterday.
They all reached the same cliff.
The same silence.
The same moment where there was no torch.
No candle.
No map.
No guide.
Just themselves.
And the darkness.
Waiting patiently.
Not to consume them.
To meet them.
That is the part people misunderstand.
The darkness is not always a monster.
Sometimes it is a mirror.
Sometimes it is a teacher.
Sometimes it is the last doorway standing between who you are and who you could become.
The darkness asks only one thing:
Will you stay?
Most people run.
Most people retreat.
Most people return to the familiar light before they learn what the darkness came to teach.
But a few stay.
A few sit in the silence long enough to hear it speak.
A few discover that fear and freedom live in neighboring rooms.
A few realize the monster they feared was simply the part of themselves they abandoned years ago.
And when morning finally arrives, they emerge different.
Not because the darkness changed them.
Because they allowed themselves to be changed.
Do the people afraid of the dark understand the moon?
I wonder.
The moon has never been afraid of the darkness surrounding it.
It shines because of it.
Without the darkness there is nothing to illuminate.
Without the night there is no moonlight.
Without uncertainty there is no courage.
Without mystery there is no discovery.
Maybe that is why the voice keeps whispering.
Don’t go.
Stay.
Not because the darkness wants to keep you.
Because the lesson isn’t finished.
Because the transformation isn’t complete.
Because the version of you waiting on the other side has one final question to ask.
How badly do you want to wake up?
