The Weather Changed When You Left

Tonight at 7:15 p.m. CST someone passed away. They left a single rainbow and sun showers over the Texas Sky.

Home.

There was no thunder.

No violent sky splitting itself open in grief.

Just rain falling through sunlight, as if the heavens had forgotten they were supposed to choose between mourning and celebration.

And then the rainbow.

Only one.

It appeared quietly across the sky, beautiful enough to make me look twice and strange enough to make me understand.

Some messages do not need words.

I stood beneath it while the rain touched everything except the light.

For a moment, the world felt suspended between places. Between here and wherever we go when the body finally becomes too heavy to carry.

Maybe death is not the darkness we have made it out to be.

Maybe the darkness belongs to those of us left standing on this side of it.

We close the eyes.

We stop the clocks.

We speak softly around empty rooms and begin dividing a life into before and after.

But the dead?

Perhaps they walk straight into the sun.

Perhaps they finally remember something the living have spent their entire lives trying to forget.

Tonight, someone knew something I didn’t.

And for one brief moment, the sky seemed willing to let me in on the secret.

Rain fell while the sun remained.

Grief and peace occupying the same piece of heaven.

Then came that single rainbow, stretched between two places I could not follow.

I don’t know what waits beyond the last breath.

I don’t know whether there are gates, ancestors, old dogs running toward us, mothers waiting in kitchens, or simply the sudden recognition that we were never as far from home as we believed.

But I know what I saw.

At 7:15, someone left this world.

And shortly afterward, the sky did something impossible enough to make me stop questioning it.

So I won’t.

Some things deserve to remain sacred instead of explained.

The rainbow faded.

The sun shower passed.

The sky returned to itself as though nothing had happened.

But something had.

Someone had gone home.

And for just a moment, they left the porch light on so I would know they made it.

Ashes to ashes-dust to dust…
