Yes, the past happened.
No one is pretending it didn’t.
But you can’t drag it behind you like a carry-on and expect to board the next chapter without turbulence. Some of you are still standing at the gate arguing with a suitcase that should’ve been left at baggage claim years ago.
Real healing isn’t rewriting the story. It’s deciding you’re not taking it with you.
And let’s be honest for a minute.
You weren’t a prisoner.
You had free will.
Just like they did.
That’s not blame. That’s power.
There was a part of you that stayed. Not because you deserved pain. Not because you were wrong. But because something inside you wasn’t healed yet. Something in you recognized something in them. Shadow meets shadow. Frequency meets frequency. Wrong alignment, perfect timing for who you were then.
You both gained something from it.
Comfort in chaos.
Validation in dysfunction.
Distraction from yourself.
That’s the part most people skip over. It’s easier to paint one villain and one victim. It’s harder to admit you dropped your own standards to avoid facing your own wounds. You gave too much so you didn’t have to give to yourself. You people-pleased so you didn’t have to sit alone with your own reflection.
Healing looks like asking:
What part of me allowed that?
Not to shame yourself.
To free yourself.
No sin is bigger than the other. You shared the shadow. And when you stop needing to be right, you start getting real.
Falling in love with potential is not love. It’s imagination. It’s building a future with someone who hasn’t built it for themselves. And expecting them to live up to who you hope they’ll become is unfair to them and unfair to you.
We meet people where they are.
If they don’t grow with you, they don’t go with you.
That’s not cold. That’s alignment.
Staying because you’ve invested time is like refusing to leave a burning house because you painted the walls yourself. Time spent is not a contract to suffer longer. And just because toxic feels familiar doesn’t mean healthy doesn’t exist. It just means healthy will feel unfamiliar at first.
We think being with someone means losing ourselves a little.
It doesn’t.
You should be more yourself with the right person. Louder. Softer. Wilder. Calmer. More you. Not shrinking. Not bending. Not negotiating your core just to be chosen.
Relationships require compromise.
But compromising who you are to keep someone is sacrificing yourself at the altar of living death.
And here’s the part nobody wants to hear:
If you don’t learn the lesson, you’ll date it again. Same energy. Different body. Different name. Same feeling in your chest. Same red flags you convince yourself are decorations.
You will repeat the pattern until you understand it was a lesson, not a life sentence.
Healing is when you can wish them well. However “well” looks for them. Not from a fake spiritual pedestal. Not from bitterness. Just neutrality. Peace. Release.
It’s when you stop carrying one emotional suitcase from relationship to relationship, expecting someone new to unpack what you refused to process. Jaded eyes. Guard up. Waiting for betrayal so you can say, “See, I knew it.”
That’s not wisdom. That’s unhealed memory.
The past can teach you.
It cannot travel with you.
So keep moving. Keep aligning. Keep adjusting your standards until they match the version of you that no longer tolerates misalignment.
You are not meant to feel caged in something that’s supposed to feel like home.
You are meant to be free everywhere you go.
Free to be too much.
Free to be not enough.
Free to be exactly who you are without editing yourself to survive someone else’s comfort level.
Wings don’t fit in suitcases.
So stop trying to fold them.
