The Counsel of Shadows

You should never take advice from those who have never walked the ground you wish to claim. Their words, though wrapped in the guise of care, are often poisoned by envy or ignorance. From their perspective, your climb is too steep, your will too fragile, your vision too unworthy of belief. And if they do offer counsel, it may be laced with the quiet wish that you remain beneath them, never daring to rise where they have failed to ascend.

A soul who cannot guide themselves should tread carefully when seeking others to steer the path. To rely too much on foreign voices is to let the noise of the world bury the sound of your own counsel. Look at each choice from every angle. Hold it up to the dark lantern of truth and weigh both shadow and light. Ask yourself not only what is gained but also what is lost. Perceive how the decision will ripple across your future. Then—and only then—decide.

For the more ears you lean toward, the more tangled your spirit becomes. Confusion is bred in chorus. The strongest advice is often your own, whispered from the depths where your truest self dwells. And if your voice feels faint, wait. Let silence cradle the question. Allow time to sharpen the edges of the choice until it is clear enough to see without trembling. Never hand away your fate simply to have another shoulder to bear the blame. The burden of your decisions belongs to you alone.

Guard yourself from anger, for wrath clouds judgment and hasty steps often tumble into pits that cannot be escaped. An untempered choice made in passion can carve scars into your future that bleed without end. It can tether the ghost of another to your thoughts, making them dwell rent-free within the corridors of your mind for all eternity. You circle endlessly through what-could-have-been, the endless litany of if only, if only, if only.

And in the darkest of those loops, you realize the cruelest truth: had you listened to yourself instead of the hollow counsel of another, you might still be lying in the comfort of your own familiar bed, living the life you had built, not the ruin inherited from borrowed wisdom.

There is salvation, though, in stillness. Meditation is the greatest cleansing—a way to silence the clamor, to sweep the dust of false voices from your mind. A dimly lit room, one candle flickering against the void, music soft in the ears like whispers from another world. Breathe in. Breathe out. The storm quiets. In the hush, clarity emerges like a blade drawn from shadow.

And then the truth stands before you. Simple. Unadorned. Yours.

Just another day in the neighborhood, yes. But also another chance to choose with eyes unclouded, another chance to keep your throne within.
