You can’t save people from themselves. The only thing you can do is avoid them. The air is thick with their negative thoughts, the weight of their bitterness pressing down like a storm cloud ready to break. Their willingness to seek revenge, as if they hold some divine power to balance the scales, is a futile endeavor. A never-ending cycle of tit for tat, racing around stabbing each other with words, with actions, with more wounds that never truly heal. Festering in their own anger, an anger that has nothing to do with you, with the world, or with justice—only with themselves.
We are forced to face these people in our daily lives. They are at work, in our families, standing next to us in line. We wonder if they are our mirror, a reflection of something we have yet to confront within ourselves. But as we look deeper, we find not a reflection, but another lost soul—trapped in their own deception. They believe happiness is a destination, a place to arrive at once they’ve collected all the right pieces. But happiness isn’t something you chase; it is a state of being, a presence within, not a prize to be won. They wander through life like lost travelers, seeking salvation in the outer world, in others, in material things, in fleeting moments that never last.
You want to take their hand, to guide them through, to show them that there is another way. But then you pause. You are forced to take a step back. This is not your burden to carry. You cannot drag someone out of their own misery; they have to climb out themselves. The negativity is consuming, and even a mere touch into their world can leave you feeling dirty, tainted by their despair. You see it in their eyes—the silent, desperate tears masked behind hardened expressions. And when you tell them that no one is coming to save them, that they must save themselves, they look at you with disbelief, with anger, with blind reverence. To them, you sound ridiculous. Your words are foreign, an unrecognizable language that their ears refuse to translate.
It’s so simple, you think. One foot in front of the other. Pull yourself up. You can do it. Stop settling for things that do not support your journey. But they do not move. They only pause long enough to find another excuse, another reason why they cannot, why they will not. Caught in their own storm, their own tornado of self-inflicted suffering, they spin in circles, crying, begging for help. But you are no saint. You are not their salvation. You, like them, are a traveler in this world. Your paths may collide, your interactions may test you, but in the end, you must remember: you are not one of them. Not anymore.
You have come too far to turn back. You have fought your own battles, crawled through your own darkness, and clawed your way toward the light. You will not descend back into the abyss for them. Some will remain stuck on the same path forever, trapped in their cycles, their anger, their self-destruction. And the birds of prey will continue to circle above, waiting. But not for you. You have chosen another path. And that is the only choice that truly matters.
