Sometimes the body knows it has been released before the mind does.
The first breath is deeper. The shoulders fall into a position they seem to remember. The feet become restless.
Nothing about the body is new. Same bones. Same skin. Same collection of scars from a life already lived.
And yet it feels newly issued.
As though someone has quietly returned it to its original owner.
There are feet capable of walking in any direction. Hands with nothing they are required to hold. Lungs discovering how much air they were built to contain.
And beyond the front door, an unreasonable amount of world.
At first, the body doesn’t quite know what to do with that.
It still obeys boundaries that are no longer there. It checks the time when nobody is waiting. Reaches for a phone it doesn’t need. Thinks about asking permission and cannot remember who it was supposed to ask.
Perhaps that is why freedom doesn’t always feel like freedom at first.
Sometimes it feels like standing at the edge of something enormous without instructions.
Then curiosity takes over.
You wander a little farther.
Nothing happens.
So you go farther still.
There is something ancient in that. Wild things move because movement is available to them. They follow weather, water, warmth, instinct. They cross fields because the fields are there.
Human beings are taught differently.
Where are you going?
Why?
For how long?
When will you be back?
There is always supposed to be an answer.
But a road doesn’t require one.
It simply continues.
One road becomes another. Familiar buildings become fields. Fields become trees. The radio begins searching for stations you have never heard before.
And somewhere between what you know and what you don’t, something in the body wakes up.
The hands loosen around the steering wheel.
The window comes down.
Cold air moves across the skin.
The horizon keeps moving every time you approach it.
There is no arrival.
Only more.
More road. More sky. More places where you have never stood.
The world was never as small as the life being lived inside it.
There are places where nobody knows your history. Nobody knows what you survived, who you loved, what you lost, or who you used to be.
For a moment, you are simply a human body occupying a small piece of earth.
Breathing.
Looking.
Existing.
Nothing more is required.
The mountain doesn’t care about your past. The ocean doesn’t require an explanation. The moon has never asked anyone where they were headed.
Maybe that is why wandering can feel so much like returning.
Not returning to a place.
Returning to the body.
Feet against unfamiliar ground. Sun on the face. Rain in the hair. Muscles tired because they carried you somewhere you wanted to go.
Maybe being born into a new body isn’t about becoming someone else at all.
Maybe it is realizing that the body you have been carrying all these years was never meant only to endure.
It was built to move.
To touch.
To taste.
To wander.
To wake beneath different skies.
There is a body.
There is a road.
There is an unreasonable amount of world.
And for once, no one needs to know where you’re going.
Not even you.
You can go.
