Changes

There is a particular kind of silence that arrives before something changes.

Not the empty kind. Not the silence of abandonment or endings. This one feels occupied, as though something has been moving quietly behind the walls while everyone else carried on believing the house was asleep.

For a while, there were only pieces.

A word written in the margin of a notebook. A color chosen for reasons that did not make sense yet. Half-finished thoughts saved in forgotten places. Ideas that appeared at inconvenient hours and refused to leave. Small things collected without explanation, each one seemingly unrelated to the next.

Until they weren’t.

That is the strange thing about creation. Sometimes you do not realize you have been building something until you finally stand far enough away to see its shape.

Tonight, the air feels different.

The furniture has not moved. The moon is still hanging exactly where it left itself yesterday. The coffee will be made in the same cup tomorrow morning, and the world will wake without ceremony. From the outside, nothing remarkable has happened.

But somewhere behind the curtain, the last candle has been lit.

There are fingerprints on things no one has touched yet. Doors have been painted that no one knows exist. Rooms have names. The shelves are waiting. Words have found their proper places, and pieces that wandered separately for years have somehow discovered they belonged to the same story.

Even the old ghosts seem suspiciously quiet.

Perhaps they know.

Change rarely announces itself when it begins. It gathers quietly. It rearranges the furniture inside you first. It asks what still belongs, what has outlived its purpose, and what has been waiting patiently for enough courage to be given a name.

Then one ordinary night, you notice the light beneath a door that was never there before.

You could open it.

But not tonight.

Tonight, you simply leave the light on.
