There is an old game people play.
Two truths and one lie.
Two lies and one truth.
Most people think the object is fooling everyone else.
It isn’t.
The object has always been fooling yourself.
I wandered into an old courthouse one evening that wasn’t marked on any map. It had no judge. No jury. No bailiff standing at the door.
Only rows of empty wooden benches polished smooth by people who had apparently been waiting for something their entire lives.
At the center of the room stood a single chair beneath one lonely light.
“Who’s on trial?” I asked.
A voice echoed through the room.
“Everyone.”
The walls were lined with mirrors instead of windows. Strange thing about those mirrors…they didn’t show faces.
They showed moments.
A promise you never intended to keep.
A compliment that hid resentment.
An apology wrapped around manipulation.
The smile you wore while your thoughts sharpened knives.
Every reflection carried the same lesson.
Truth never disappears.
It only changes hiding places.
People spend extraordinary amounts of energy decorating lies.
Some polish them.
Some perfume them.
Some rehearse them until they sound like memories.
Some tell them so often they become roommates with them.
Eventually they stop remembering where the lie ends and the truth begins.
But truth has patience.
It has no expiration date.
It doesn’t pound on your front door.
It waits.
It settles into silence.
It hides between unfinished sentences.
It lingers inside the hesitation before an answer.
It lives in the details people accidentally skip.
It waits in body language.
In restless sleep.
In nervous laughter.
In stories that somehow change every time they’re told.
People think darkness protects secrets.
Darkness protects nothing.
It simply delays introductions.
Because every hidden thing has an appointment with daylight.
What is whispered eventually learns how to speak.
What is buried eventually learns how to breathe.
What is done in the dark develops roots that push upward until they crack the concrete above them.
The strange thing about deception is this…
Your tongue always knows before your mind admits it.
It stumbles.
It adds unnecessary details.
It rushes where patience would have been enough.
It fills silence that never asked to be filled.
It tries to outrun something that has never been chasing it.
Because the chase was always happening from the inside.
Conscience is a relentless witness.
It doesn’t forget.
It doesn’t retire.
It doesn’t negotiate.
The courtroom grew quieter.
The mirrors began fading until only one remained.
Mine.
I expected to see my face.
Instead, I saw every version of myself I had ever tried to become.
The strong one.
The wounded one.
The successful one.
The frightened one.
The version that wanted applause.
The version that wanted peace.
Then I realized something.
The greatest lie isn’t usually the one we tell someone else.
It’s the one we repeat to ourselves because the truth requires change.
The voice spoke one last time.
“You think your lie hides the truth.”
The room fell silent.
“It never did.”
“It only hid you from yourself.”
The light above the chair grew brighter until every corner of the courtroom was illuminated.
No shadows remained.
No places left to conceal anything.
Only clarity.
Only honesty.
Only the quiet weight of reality standing exactly where it had always been.
And then the voice, no louder than a whisper, said the words every soul hears eventually…
“Come forth.”
“From here.”
“From there.”
“From anywhere you’ve been hiding.”
“The light has been waiting.”
“I see you.”
Not to condemn you.
Not to embarrass you.
Not to destroy you.
But because truth has never been your enemy.
