Some people never realize the conversation ended three versions of you ago.
They keep typing.
Double text.
Triple text.
Paragraph after paragraph like they are still standing in a courtroom where somebody asked for their defense. Nobody asked. Nobody cares. The audience left halfway through Act One, but they are still center stage sweating under a spotlight nobody turned on.
Sometimes you just have to let people talk themselves into exhaustion.
Because the truth is, some people only exist through reaction. They need the fight. Need the chaos. Need the emotional tug-of-war because silence forces them to sit alone with themselves, and that is a prison sentence they cannot survive.
Some people you are forced to interact with in life. Blood does not magically create safety. Titles do not create respect. And history sure as hell does not guarantee access.
So the interaction becomes minimal.
Short.
Controlled.
Like handling radioactive waste with kitchen tongs.
You realize they have nothing new to say because they never evolved past the role they assigned themselves years ago. The controller. The victim. The martyr. The drunk philosopher at the kitchen table holding court over children too young to know they were being emotionally held hostage.
And maybe that is the saddest part.
I could not imagine growing up with a warden standing over my shoulder every second of my life. A drunk one at that.
Three square meals like that somehow erased emotional imprisonment.
No sleepovers.
No parks.
No freedom.
No real friendships.
No life outside the walls of somebody else’s dysfunction.
Just beer runs and recycled misery.
Some people were not raised.
They were monitored.
Every laugh questioned.
Every movement tracked.
Every independent thought treated like betrayal.
Then those same people grow older and wonder why the phone calls stopped getting answered.
Because eventually the child grows up and realizes the prison guard was never protecting them.
They were protecting control.
And once control disappears, panic sets in.
That is where the double and triple texts come from.
Not love.
Not concern.
Panic.
Because when the phone conversations disappear, all they are left with is their own echo bouncing off the walls.
Same old song.
Same old dance.
Poor me.
Poor me.
Poor me.
Meanwhile the illusion they built their entire identity around starts exploding all over the living room floor like cheap fireworks from a gas station stand.
The confidence becomes sloppy.
Forced.
Desperate.
You can see the manipulation from ten miles away now because healing sharpens your eyesight. Once you see the pattern, you cannot unsee it.
And then one day you look at them and realize something almost poetic.
They became the exact parent they swore they would never become.
Funny how life circles back around like a debt collector.
The ugly on the inside always makes its way to the surface eventually. You cannot marinate in bitterness for decades without your face learning the language of resentment. Sleepless nights plotting against people who already emotionally left the building years ago will do that to you.
That kind of hatred ages people differently.
You start seeing it in the eyes.
The jaw.
The twitchiness.
The fake confidence.
The obsession with “winning” conversations nobody else is participating in anymore.
And the wildest part?
If their plans actually worked, they would not still be trying them.
At some point logic should kick in.
You would think after years of manipulation backfiring they would try another angle.
But that would require self-awareness.
And people who know everything can never be helped.
Therapy exists for a reason, but you cannot save somebody addicted to their own narrative. Some people would rather drown in familiar misery than admit they were the one holding the bricks tied to their ankles.
So now the rest of us sit back watching the show like seasoned gamblers at a horse track.
Taking bets on the next emotional stunt.
The next fake emergency.
The next guilt trip.
The next “poor me” monologue.
Turns out I am up a hundred dollars.
Predictable people hate observant people because observant people ruin the magic trick.
And somewhere tonight there is still a Fireball bottle with a beer chaser sitting next to somebody convinced they are the smartest person in the room while their entire life burns down around them one bad decision at a time.
Look for the loudest victim in the room.
There is your loser.
Meanwhile some of us finally made it out.
Out of the noise.
Out of the manipulation.
Out of the emotional hostage situation disguised as family.
Out of the prison disguised as protection.
And from the Texas sky where the air finally feels honest, here is to new beginnings.
To silence that feels peaceful instead of threatening.
To homes without wardens.
To conversations that do not feel like survival.
To finally sleeping through the night without somebody else’s chaos clawing at the walls of your mind.
Sleep well.
