The Ghost at the Table

People make choices in their own lives.

That is the part everybody wants to dance around like accountability is some kind of haunted mirror they are scared to look into too long.

But let’s be honest.

You knew from the beginning something was off.

That is why you watched me your whole life.

Closely.

People do not keep tabs on people they feel equal to.

And deep down you knew there was never going to fully be a “you” in that story.

Not really.

Because you could never be me.

The elusive one.
The one that slipped through fingers, expectations, labels, and cages faster than people could lock the door.

I got away because I was always meant to.

And the crazy part is I already knew it while everybody else was still playing house with delusion.

I knew what I wanted early.

Not every detail.

But the feeling of it.

The direction of it.

I knew how I wanted my life to feel before I knew what it would look like.

And once you know that, dead weight becomes unbearable.

See, I was moving.

Always moving.

Mentally. Spiritually. Emotionally.

Meanwhile some people stayed frozen in:
“I don’t want to grow up.”
“I’m a Toys R Us kid.”
“I want all the rewards of adulthood without the responsibility attached.”

And I saw it before everybody else did because I was there in the beginning.

Long before outsiders tried dragging themselves into my world trying to occupy spaces they never built.

That is the funny thing about energy.

People think they can steal environments they never created.

Homes.
Relationships.
Memories.
Identity.

Like dragging my furniture around somehow made it yours.

That Salvador Dalí piece?

Mine.

Every room I touched had me in it before you ever walked through the door.

Every piece of furniture I picked myself.

Every atmosphere curated from my own mind.

Hell, some of it may still be sitting in a basement somewhere collecting dust while people wonder why they never felt peace around it.

Because energy lingers.

People carry pieces of other people for decades and pretend they do not.

But the body always knows.

The soul always knows.

A person always knows whose heart belonged where.

Even when they are trying to steal one.

That is why the ghost is always sitting at the table.

Front and center.

The uninvited guest nobody acknowledges but everybody feels.

See, you made it easy.

And I made it hard.

That was the difference.

There were standards with me.

Expectations.
Growth.
Depth.
Accountability.

You actually had to evolve standing next to me.

But with some people?

They were just along for the ride.

No map.
No direction.
No intention.

Just floating through life feeding off whoever was willing to carry them emotionally, financially, spiritually, or mentally.

Spoiled rotten souls disguised as victims.

People who mastered dependency while calling it love.

And me?

I came from nothing.

That is still the thing I am most proud of.

Nothing.

No silver spoon.
No rescue plan.
No soft landing.

Just two bare hands and the refusal to stay where life dropped me.

I built my empire myself.

My mind built it first.
Then my discipline did the rest.

And people who inherit comfort rarely understand people who survive struggle.

Because survival creates a different kind of human.

One that learns endurance instead of entitlement.

I finished the courses.

I stayed up late.

I kept going after disappointment after disappointment after disappointment.

I got let down by people, systems, relationships, promises, and life itself.

And still made it.

That kind of strength cannot be bought.

You cannot absorb it through proximity.

You cannot fake it on social media.

You cannot sit on a barstool every night running from yourself while the clock eats your future and expect destiny to reward you differently.

Life eventually notices avoidance.

And eventually avoidance becomes identity.

That is what people do not understand.

Every year you refuse to grow becomes visible.

It settles into the face.
The posture.
The bitterness.
The excuses.

And the wildest part?

You had thirty years.

Thirty years to take what was mine.

Thirty years to become the better option.

Thirty years to build something meaningful.

And you still could not do it.

Because we were never the same.

Thankfully.

You do not get to trash through life and then judge the dust you created.

The trash eventually takes itself out.

Always.

And people love throwing around the word hate because it makes them feel important.

“Oh you hate me.”

No honey.

Hate requires emotional investment.

Hate requires energy.

Hate requires care somewhere underneath it.

This is not hate.

This is nothing.

No empathy.
No regret.
No sadness.
No longing.

Just emptiness where emotional attachment used to sit.

And honestly?

That scares people more than anger ever will.

Because anger still means access.

Indifference means the door disappeared entirely.

Some people confuse manipulation with connection.

Control with love.

Possession with loyalty.

But eventually you see it clearly.

The guilt tactics.
The emotional games.
The constant need to control outcomes, narratives, people, and perceptions.

And at some point you stop asking:
“How could they do this?”

And start realizing:
“This is simply who they are.”

That realization changes everything.

Because once you truly see somebody clearly, the illusion cannot survive anymore.

And that is the real ending nobody talks about.

Not explosive hatred.
Not revenge.
Not dramatic closure.

Just the quiet realization that someone no longer has the ability to emotionally reach you at all.

The ghost finally leaves the table.

And all that remains is you.

Still standing.
Still building.
Still becoming.

Without them.
