As the calendar flips to January 1st, gyms everywhere transform into bustling hubs of hope and determination. The influx of fresh faces—New Year’s resolutioners—marks a predictable yet polarizing time of year for gym regulars, affectionately (or not so affectionately) known as gym rats. For the dedicated few who have carved out a sanctuary amidst the clang of weights and the hum of treadmills, this annual migration of newcomers evokes a mix of emotions.
To the new faces: Welcome! Let’s start with the good news. Most gym rats want you here. Truly. We admire your drive to better yourself. After all, every one of us started somewhere. We understand the courage it takes to step into a place full of unfamiliar equipment, fit bodies, and that pervasive smell of rubber mats and sweat. Many of us have been in your shoes, battling our insecurities, searching for something to cling to in the chaos of life.
But here’s the hard truth: many of you won’t make it. Statistically, a staggering number of New Year’s fitness goals fizzle out before February. It’s not because you’re incapable or unworthy. It’s because fitness, at its core, isn’t about the gym membership, the cute workout clothes, or even the pounds you hope to shed. It’s about facing yourself—your demons, your excuses, your habits, and the pain that may have brought you here in the first place.
The gym isn’t just a building. For us gym rats, it’s a cathedral, a battlefield, and a therapist’s office rolled into one. It’s where we fight through bad days, celebrate small wins, and feel our strongest selves emerge. It’s sacred ground, and respecting it means respecting the journey—not just your own but everyone else’s too.
A Few Requests from the Gym Rats:
- Rack Your Weights
Nothing says rookie like leaving dumbbells scattered across the floor or plates abandoned on the squat rack. Gym rats might not say it out loud, but we’re silently judging. Returning weights to their proper place is gym etiquette 101, and it’s a simple way to show respect to the space and others. - Clean the Machines
The elliptical, the bench, or even that oddly-shaped yoga mat—if you sweat on it, wipe it down. The gym is already a petri dish of germs. Don’t add fuel to the fire. - Commit to the Effort
We understand it’s hard, especially at the start. But please, at least pretend you want to be here. Sitting on your phone for 10 minutes while monopolizing the leg press isn’t just unproductive for you—it’s frustrating for everyone else waiting for their turn.
Why We Hope You Stay
Even though the odds might not be in your favor, there’s a part of us rooting for you. Every January arrival has the potential to become a February regular and, eventually, a lifelong devotee. You might stumble. You might struggle to stay consistent. But the rewards are worth the fight. There’s a version of you waiting to be discovered—stronger, more confident, and more resilient. And who knows? Maybe one day you’ll look back on this New Year’s as the start of a transformation you never saw coming.
So to the resolutioners: welcome to our world. We hope you stay. And if you don’t, we’ll still see you next January. But this time, maybe rack your weights.
Sincerely,
Your Friendly Neighborhood Gym Rats
